Artist Statement / Démarche artistique
I collect used objects and ephemera from the urban environment through waste picking and photography, and I intuitively rearticulate these fragments through recycling, experimental creation and performance. Using printmaking, sculpture, mixed media and installation, I work in layers and merge different elements to create my pieces. A particular attention is placed on the physical and metaphorical use of materials and objects, resulting in whimsical changes in appearance or functionality of the transformed objects. The resulting works assert themselves as assembled and animated artistic organisms of an absurd and/or surreal quality. While engendering reflection about social activities, waste management, the value we assign to objects-all the while challenging conceptions of art and beauty- the works also offer the idea that the junk from the metropole has the ability to talk back.

Je collectionne les objets usés et éphémères de l’environnement urbain que je ramasse dans les ordures ou que je photographie. Je reformule ensuite ces fragments à travers un processus intuitif qui implique le recyclage, la création expérimentale et la performance. En utilisant l’impression, la sculpture, les techniques mixtes et l’installation, je travaille la juxtaposion de différents éléments afin de constituer de nouveaux types d’objets. Une attention particulière est alors accordée à l’aspect physique et au potentiel métaphorique de ces matériaux trouvés, si bien que leur transformation prend une ampleur fantaisiste d’un point de vue formel autant que fonctionnel. Les oeuvres résultant de ce processus peuvent être perçues comme des organismes artistiques assemblés et animés dans un cadre absurde et/ou surréaliste. Alors que celles-ci invitent à la réflexion en ce qui à trait aux activités sociales, à la gestion des déchets, et à la valeur que nous attribuons aux objets – tout en remettant en question les conceptions qui relient l’art et la beauté – les oeuvres sous-entendent que ces artefacts issus du monde urbain ont un pouvoir d’évocation.
